Denis Simonov 24th Australian Conference on Microscopy and Microanalysis 2016

Denis Simonov

Denis Simonov obtained a BSc (Honours) degree from the University of Auckland (New Zealand) in 2008 with specialisations in neuroscience and cancer biology. He then spent two years working as a research technician at the Veterinary Virology Laboratory at the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health at Massey University and then further three years at Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre. During this time he took part in both academic and commercial research programmes. In 2013 Denis started a PhD at Auckland University thought the Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology and the Department of Surgery. In his PhD Denis is investigating human-pathogen interactions via extracellular RNA molecules and secreted membrane vesicles. During the course of his PhD Denis utilised and developed techniques for visualising RNA transfer between pathogenic bacteria and human host cells. The project also involves the use of microscopy and nanoparticle tracking analysis techniques to characterise and quantify membrane vesicles released by bacteria. In 2015 Denis presented a talk on his project at the Microscopy New Zealand Conference and was awarded the Trans-Tasman Bursary sponsored by ProSciTech Pty Ltd to attend the 2016 Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society conference.
