Yu-Yen Chen
Dr. Chen is a research fellow at the Melbourne Dental School, University of Melbourne. Initially trained as a nutritionist in Taiwan, she became a protein biochemist through postgraduate studies at the Graduate School of Biochemistry (National Taiwan University) and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (University of Melbourne) to pursue her strong research interest. She has expertise in protein purification and characterisation, applying mass spectrometry in the fields of proteomics, and most recently lipidomics to elucidate functions of virulence proteins in oral pathogens. Her work on the novel protein secretion system and surface layer in the periopathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, published in 2011, led to her intensive involvement in cryo EM imaging in the last few years. She has since employed cryo EM in a variety of research projects, including studies on oral bacterial biofilms, outer membrane vesicles and anti-microbial peptides.
