Yanyu Zhou 24th Australian Conference on Microscopy and Microanalysis 2016

Yanyu Zhou

Yanyu (Maggie) Zhou is a PhD candidate in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, UNSW Australia. Her research interests include materials characterisation using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). She graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Engineering in Metallurgy at UNSW. She then commenced her postgraduate studies, which is supported by the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF). Maggie’s research area changed from metallic alloys to epitaxial oxide thin films, particularly, multiferroics and ferroelectrics. She focuses mainly on the interfacial characterisation and chemistry of such thin films by both conventional and aberration-corrected TEMs. To achieve her goals, she familiarised herself with specimen preparation methods such as, ex-situ focus ion beam milling and mechanical tripod/ion polishing. Maggie works under the supervision of Professor Paul Munroe and uses the facilities of the Electron Microscope Unit, UNSW. She also collaborates with Dr David Mitchell in high-resolution TEM at the Electron Microscope Centre, University of Wollongong. Meanwhile, Maggie is an active member of the postgraduate society within the school. She has contributed in organising various social and charity events and continually encourages her cohort to interact with the school’s broader research community.
